Thanks to your Feed Geelong donations, men experiencing homelessness are being provided with a healthy and nutritious evening meal during their stay at Samaritan House Geelong.

Established as a community-driven response to the growing problem of homelessness, Samaritan House provides a welcoming and safe home for men over 18 years of age experiencing homelessness. For the most part, guests are able to stay for 30 days at a time. The aim is that the provision of emergency accommodation at a time where it is needed most will helping guests transition to a better future.

The supply of nutritious and sustaining evening meals is a key part of guests’ recovery from the life crisis they have experienced. A $3,500 Feed Geelong grant in 2017 has been crucial in supporting the organisation’s ability to provide this assistance.

The evening meal gives the men an opportunity to interact and connection with each other and the volunteers when oftentimes people experiencing homelessness find themselves disengaged and isolated.

Getting a place in Samaritan House means that the men also receive access to food, something many who are homeless struggle to access consistently. During the last year, up to 100 guests at Samaritan House have been provided with an evening meal including Joe.*

Due to a serious arm injury that left him unable to work for some time, Joe found himself living on the streets. Providing respite and a chance to get back on his feet, Joe was offered a place a Samaritan House.

A qualified chef by trade, Joe often takes up the chance to cook meals along with Samaritan House volunteers.  Getting to use these skills has helped him become more confident in once again finding a job once his arm fully recovers.

With the aim of addressing Geelong’s food insecurity crisis, Feed Geelong raises awareness and valuable funds to assist our region’s emergency food relief system which is working on a daily basis to help men, women and children in our community who are struggling to put three nutritious meals on the table each day.
