Looks like a typical shopping list. Maybe it looks like yours.
But this list belongs to a couple named Jamie and Belinda and they aren’t visiting the local grocery store. Instead due to financial pressures they are struggling to feed their family and they are visiting the Geelong Food Relief Centre (GFRC). Like their local grocery store, they are greeted by the friendly assistants and are given the ability to choose what they need – in this way, despite their need, their shopping experience is no different to any other couple they know.
Because at the Geelong Food Relief Centre, it’s important to provide clients who are experiencing food insecurity the dignity of choice.
The Geelong Food Relief Centre is a not for profit foodbank, operating mini-marts that provide those experiencing food insecurity the dignity of choice at sites in North Geelong and the Geelong CBD. Operating for almost 30 years, Geelong Food Relief Centre is currently the second largest food bank operation in regional Victoria and provides emergency relief in the form of nutritious food and household grocery items to those experiencing financial hardship within the G21 Region.
In 2017, Geelong Food Relief Centre received a Feed Geelong grant of $5,000 to purchase a new freezer for their North Geelong mini-mart to increase their capacity to support those experiencing food insecurity.
Since installing the new freezer, GFRC have distributed an additional 2,170kgs of food, helping people such as Jamie and Belinda. Access to the GFRC means Jamie and Belinda are able to provide healthy food for their children, including fresh produce and frozen products such as the meals prepared by Fareshare.
With the aim of addressing Geelong’s food insecurity crisis, Feed Geelong raises awareness and valuable funds to assist our region’s emergency food relief system which is working on a daily basis to help men, women and children in our community who are struggling to put three nutritious meals on the table each day.
