This is Dean. Every Friday you can find him at Geelong Food Relief Centre’s North Geelong minimart preparing three easy and nutritious meals.

But it’s not just the delicious meals that clients get to walk away with.

Thanks to your 2016 Feed Geelong donations, Geelong Food Relief Centre received a grant to purchase a mobile kitchen to assist in offering educational opportunities for clients. Led by a team of qualified volunteer chefs including Dean, cooking demonstrations are presented to teach clients how to create easy and nutritious meals.

Last Friday, clients were treated to tuna mornay on pasta, potato, leek and cauliflower soup, salsa and corn pikelets and spicy sausage casserole – all made from ingredients available at the mini-mart!

Finding that many clients – once redeeming their food vouchers – lack the knowledge to prepare nutritious food, Dean helps clients understand how easy it is to cook healthy and nutritious meals. These cooking demonstrations have been a hit with clients – providing a meal on the day AND ideas that they can take home.

The Geelong Food Relief Centre is a not for profit food bank operation located in both North Geelong and the Geelong CBD. It was established in 1990 and since its inception has grown into one of the largest food bank operations in regional Victoria. Geelong Food Relief Centre provides food assistance to individuals experiencing financial hardship as well as support to local agencies offering food assistance through its bulk distribution warehouse. In the 2016/17 Financial Year, Geelong Food Relief Centre have distributed 655 tonnes of food to those in need in the Geelong / G21 region.

Funds raised during the Feed Geelong Appeal (an initiative of the Give Where You Live Foundation) will provide grants and support to assist our community’s emergency food relief system such as that provided to Geelong Food Relief Centre.
